A patient of mine (whom I had helped acquire an Inner Guide), a divorced mother, wanted to remarry. Her reasons were completely understandable. She loved her children and wanted them to have a father, and she was eager for a resolution to the situation of being alone. She had found someone who seemed, by all outward appearances, to be a good candidate.
Her friends approved. He was pleasant and attentive. Nobody around her raised a red flag.
But her Inner Guide did.
What Her Friends Couldn't See
Before the marriage, this man made efforts to show interest in her children. On the surface, it looked reasonable. But her subliminal perceptions — those quiet, below-conscious observations that we all have but are unable to access—had picked up on something about him: that his interest was acted, not genuine.
Her Inner Guide had access to those perceptions. It raised concerns.
She didn't listen.
It is not hard to understand why. She wanted so badly to remarry, and for such loving reasons, that she overrode what her Inner Guide was telling her. Her friends saw nothing wrong. The life she wanted seemed finally within reach.
My Inner Guide had access to her Inner Guide's knowledge, and I questioned her choice. But she didn't listen to me, either.
The Cost of Not Listening
Almost immediately after the wedding, the truth emerged. Once married, he made little effort to conceal that he had no real interest in her children. The performance was over. The marriage, which had seemed so promising, was the wrong choice — and she found herself facing a second divorce.
Only then did she turn back to her Inner Guide. And this time, she listened.
With its guidance, she eventually found the right man — someone whose interest in her children was genuine, not performed. She is now happily married. And I am happy for her.
What This Story Tells Us
Her friends were not wrong to approve. They were working with what was visible. But the Inner Guide operates at a different level entirely —it noticed what no one else could: the small, telling signs beneath the surface of a carefully maintained impression.
We all have subliminal perceptions operating beneath our conscious awareness. We cannot access them directly — but they are there. An Inner Guide can perceive them. And sometimes, as in this story, what they contain is exactly what we most need to know.
